Stamp - Krita User (Template by firstfear) by WhiteLilyDragon Stamp - Krita User (Template by firstfear) by WhiteLilyDragon
I noticed the lack of a Krita User stamp, so I put one together using this template by firstfear.

If this is the first you have heard of it, Krita is an open-source painting program for Windows and Linux. Its brush engine is very advanced and offers an overwhelming list of options for painting digitally. If you have a graphics tablet and run on Linux, this might be the art software for you.

It depends on your needs and preferences. Both Krita and Photoshop share enough similarities in their GUIs that it doesn't surprise me when people compare them.

Personally, I prefer Krita's smoother brushes, large variety of brushes, (Which grows as more artists develop brush packs for Krita.) and all around intuitive work flow with tablets. It's a painting app designed and programmed by artists, for artists, which it really shows the more I use it.

The only thing I hear people talk about is how Krita has less tools or plugins than Photoshop, but that's slowly improving. The next major version of Krita may have Python scripting, and the vector tools will get better in time. Even the animation process may support sound/music in upcoming updates!

Krita's popularity has surged since the release of 3.0, and before that, 2.9 would sometimes get as many as 100,000 downloads a day. I love that Krita's getting more attention, it's well deserved.

Indeed. :la: Krita is running swimmingly on Windows as well now too, I absolutely love it. At any rate, I might not go back to GIMP. XD

Haha too true! I use Ubuntu Studio, but it was Krita and Mypaint's window versions that made me switch  . Gimp is nice too, but now I normally use it for more specific things (such as making animations). Krita is definitely the program I use the most for digital painting now.

Yeah, GIMP's great for making animations with. ^^ Its brush tools sadly need lots of CPU time to itself, so I'm afraid to use it for art with my tablet on a laptop. (It kept running my HP laptop with Ubuntu real hot.) Krita's definitely my main app for painting and sketching at this point, it performs better on both Windows and Ubuntu.

The text tool was hard to figure out, but everything else is so fluid and intuitive, I love the way it works. I'll probably never need Photoshop, if even game studios are switching to Krita.

I think OpenGL acceleration also plays a fair role in performance, as GIMP's still stuck with OpenCL stuff. (GIMP 3.0 might change that.)

Krita is an advanced digital art program geared towards painting. ^^ Its features are easily comparable to Photoshop, if not better in some areas, while improving in others with each release. Some professionals around the world actually use and prefer Krita for video game development. They even have a kickstarter running right now to fund more features for the 2.9 release.

If you're already used to GIMP or another art program, I would say Krita is easier to use too, once you figure out which brushes you like using, and playing around with the customizable GUI to fit your needs. Did I mention their mascot is an adorable cyber squirrel? Linky

Since it's open source, it's also 100% free to use, and currently has stable builds for both Windows or Linux. (Although since I use Ubuntu, I don't know what the Windows version is like.) A Mac OS X version is also on the table for future releases. I highly recommend Krita, even if you don't have a tablet. Canvas rotation, and its vector tools, are nice to have for your art.
